How Vowel Signs Work
With the consonant ക (ka):

Unique Features
The ഴ Sound (zha)
Malayalam shares with Tamil the unique ഴ sound - a retroflex approximant found nowhere else in Indian languages. It appears in the word മലയാളം (malayāḷam) itself.
Conjunct Consonants (കൂട്ടക്ഷരം)
When consonants cluster without vowels, they combine into conjuncts. Malayalam has extensive conjunct forms, especially for Sanskrit words:

- ന്ന (nna)
- ല്ല (lla)
- മ്മ (mma)
Chillaksharam (ചില്ലക്ഷരം)
Malayalam has special final consonant forms called chillu letters:
